There are mainly two types of mushroom jasper (also called mushroom rhyolite) on the market. One is from northwest of Phoenix, Arizona. The rock gets its name from the repeating gray pattern that sometimes looks like a mass of growing mushrooms. Mining is very limited and it's very hard to find this material in beads. Fortunately, we were able to purchase some rough directly from the miner back in the early 2000s when it was first discovered. The other mushroom jasper comes from China. It's a softer material than its American version. It has nice rich brown, red, orange and green colors. Affordability has gained the stone its popularity in recent years.
